Balcón de Europa

The Balcón de Europa – Balcony of Europe – is  situated on a rocky promontory and was formerly a fortress designed to keep out British pirates. It was made famous by King Alfonso XII (1857 – 1885) and his statue can be found at the far end. Today it is the focal point of the town. Throughout the year the Balcón sees a number of events with most processions either starting or ending at the church of El Salvador located just behind and to the west. The Balcony also forms the centrepiece of the New Years celebrations with large crowds gathering here to celebrate the coming year. It is a wonderful place for a stroll, particularly on a summer evening, with plenty of places to enjoy a drink and soak up the atmosphere. In the adjacent Plaza Balcón de Europa you will also find lots of other bars and restaurants to choose from. The Balcón de Europa is located between the two beaches of Playa El Salon and Playa La Calahonda around one hundred meters from the Town Hall. It is now a pedestrianised area and not normally accessible by car however you can park in the Municipal car park located below […]
